New updated look with a few secret mods on the inside. 1/8th” jacks mirror 1/4″ jacks to make interfacing with modular gear easier. Of course we always recommend using on of our GPI (Guitar Pedal Interface) eurorack module if your looking for full eurorack integration.

Please read:

The Electron Fuzz “Custom” is an extremely high gain distortion. Seriously, normal volume setting is at about 10% of its full output potential. Two gain/tone controls “Hurt” and “Pain” give a variety of tone textures and a feedback noise loop can be adjusted to add a very gritty almost 8-bit sound or a squelching scream. (Great for droning or well crafted solos and recording). The extra stomp switch adds 2 more additional gain stages and a boost of high end to the sound. Best of all the distortion oscillates when notes are held adding a new level of expression.

***Orders may take 1-2 days depending on availability.

Here is a great demo video from the “Pedal and Effects” youtube channel featuring Alessandro Cortini of NIN, Sonoio and Modwheelmood.

Please read the brief history of the Electron Fuzz here.

Things I enjoy about this pedal:

  • Fuzzy to crunchy tone
  • Wide range of possible textures and character
  • Expressive distortion oscillations
  • Feedback noise loop for unusual sound design
  • Extremely high gain for recording direct to your DAW
  • Use with guitars and keyboards
  • VU meter responds to your playing

The red LED on the radio tower switches on when boost mode is enabled. A convent way to know where you are when playing.

• Knob controls:

A unique approach to tone control…

Hurt: Controls the gain of 3rd gain stage. Lowering the gain will also reduce low end.
Pain: Controls the gain of the 2nd transistor gain stage. Lowering the gain will reduce high end.
Output: Volume/saturation. Take some of the edge off the mix or crank the pain and hurt all the way for a big, dirty, crunchy fuzz.
FB Noise: On/Off adjusts the amount of feedback in the circuit for noise making. Creates a weird octave mod fx.

• Switch controls:
Low cut toggle: Cuts the low end for a slightly less bassy more gated sound.
x1000 gain: On left stomp switch. This takes your sound through an addition 2 transistor gain stages and pushes the electrons way past 11! The booster switch adds a loud and dirty, thrash crunch to this versatile pedal. Incredible for feedback noise and FX textures. Can cause the parasitic frequency oscillation but sounds awesome while playing.
True Bypass: Lets you play through the pedal.

• Meter: Responds to your playing, and reflects first gain stage transistor distortion. Illuminates when active.

Electron Fuzz Custom (Retro)

We recently ran out of panels for this. We don’t get enough consistent orders to keep this one on the roster. Most folks go with the standard aluminum pedal version. Vintage meters are also getting scarce and more expensive each day.

Of course we can always service any units that may need help down the road. Just not making new ones.

We will be leaving this page up for reference. Enjoy, Johnathan-

***All deposits are applied in full towards purchase when your box is ready to ship.

The Electron Fuzz Custom  “RETRO” houses the same circuit as the aluminum pedal version but is placed in a classy wood box. ***We have added the “Bleed” feature from the now discontinued EFC (Bleed/Decay) version. It provides a clean signal to mix under the distortion signal. Both distortion and clean signals have their own volume control.

EFC Studio

EFC Studio 19″ Rack

DISCONTINUED!

Jan 1st 2026: Due to the cost of parts and the time it takes to build we have decided to retire this version. I may come back later with a re-design that eliminates the costly VU meters with a smaller foot print but that will take some time. Of course we will always continue to service any units if needed.

**If you already have an order in please don’t worry. We will be honoring all remaining custom orders put in before January 1st 2026.

Leaving this page up for reference. Enjoy, Johnathan –

Price: $995 (Backlit VU Meters)

Currently not offered with vintage meters. The back orders ate up a lot of resources. We may put one up with vintage meters as a “one off” every now and then. Having to work the magic of those vintage meters two at a time has been difficult. It’s one thing if these were not premium boxes and any old floppy meter would be acceptable. But we take great pride in what we do and “old floppy meters” are not what we are going for. In order to assure a timely delivery with a minimal wait time we are switching to the fancy back lit VU meters.

The EFC (Electron Fuzz Custom) is a super hi gain distortion with a parallel clean circuit and self oscillating feedback.  The circuit was redesigned to fit the “studio” environment. The Studio version houses two EFC distortions in one 19″ 3u rack. Balanced XLR ins/outs on the back. Linkable Hi-Z inputs in the front.

The EFC distortion is very crunchy due to the way the transistors are biased. On the Studio version I added a new feature. A toggle that can change the biasing to a more conventional response. This is most apparent when using it with guitar or sounds where a longer decay is desired. It makes the notes sustain more.

The EFC Studio is intended to be used on every type of instrument. Guitar, Drums, Synths, Vocals etc. It can be used for stereo processing but is technically dual mono. This gives you better control over the stereo field. Personally I enjoy bus mixing through it. While there is nothing subtle about the EFC circuit, it can be used a very subtle ways.

Key Features:

    • Unconventional tone control: The “Hurt” and “Pain” knobs work as tone controls, but are directly tied to the gain staging. When you adjust one your adjusting the dynamics of the circuit. Not just sweeping out hi or low end. This makes for very interesting textures and a wide range of possible tones.

    • Parallel clean circuit: Use this to mix the original signal under the distortion. Drive the inputs harder and the “Bleed” becomes a softer overdrive.

    • Input attenuation: “Input” attenuates the signal going to the distortion circuit. Less signal means less circuit compression.

    • Balanced ins/outs: XLR ins and outs for studio uses. XLR outputs are active while using the front Hi-Z ins and outs.

    • Linkable Hi-Z inputs: Plug a guitar or synth right into the front. When the inputs are linked a mono signal becomes stereo. It is possible to run the outs in front to an amp or other gear.

    • Universal power: Internal regulated power supply. 85 VAC to 264 VAC. Ideal for international power grids. No wall wart needed.

    • New Biasing mode: For more conventional decay response.

    • Dimensions: 19″ x 5.5″ x 5″ deep.

    • Panel meters: Supports both 2.5″ and 3.5″ panel meters. Look can vary depending on type used. Vintage and NOS panel meters will not match. When possible we will use the same style or manufacturer unless otherwise requested. Extremely mismatched meters my add to a more “Frankenstein-ish” look.

We have a limited number of Nuclear Winter White EFCcv euorack panels available. These are only sold here on the website and not sent out to our retailers. Once they are gone it may be a while before we make more. And now back to the original content…

Previously: The Electron Fuzz Custom into 100% full eurorack format. This is the full production run. Laser cut aluminum panel. Built by organic free range Portlanders. Lots of videos on Instagram. Click here to browse my personal RML account.

The eurorack module is essentially the same as the “EFCcv euro” pedal with a couple of slight modifications.

[list_circle]

  • I’ve added the GPI (Guitar Pedal Interface) input attenuation. This lets you bump the input down even lower levels to compensate for the hotter eurorack line levels. It also give you the ability to still use it with guitars and standard line level instruments such as external drum machines and synths like with the original guitar pedal. You can literally patch a guitar right in using the proper 1/4″ to 1/8″ cable.
  • Taking full advantage of the higher voltages available I was able boost the final output of the pedal to full eurorack levels. The “Bleed” (Clean Mix) is now independent of the distortion GPI attenuation. So mix that awesome hi-fidelity signal in with your distortion, or turn it completely off. Its up to you!
  • I’ve included the original “EFC” output. This is a direct tap of the pre-eurorack EFC guitar pedal. The output is muted when in bypass. The output is lower (like the original pedal)  and before the final op amp gain staging. Feel free to plug an output signal in and see what happens. Its an “in” AND an “out”.
  • This version has conventional knobs. Meaning as you turn to the right the volume increases. The original pedal works in reverse. I will likely change that back when we have the manufactured panel. I’ve always felt the reverse knobs helps break out of the
  • IMPORTANT: This is a high gain distortion. It will boost any line noise you feed into it. This is most apparent when the x1000 toggle is engaged. You may think your system is quite until you crank that gain up! It will not insert noise into your system, only amplify noise that is already there. This is a byproduct of distortion pedals and is not something I can filter out without affecting the sound. If you have it plugged in and NOT in bypass mode you will hear your systems line noise. This might be an non-issue since its not noticeable while sound is running through it. Naturally when not using it and nothing is plugged into it you wont hear anything. I just like to remind people there are consequences to your actions. Artificially boosting your gain this much sounds great but is not without its artifacts.
  • It has true bypass just like the guitar pedal. Yeah thats crazy but I left that on for performances.
  • Just like on the standard pedals there can be potentiometer wiper noise. Most apparent when no sound is running though the pedal.

[/list_circle]

A couple of demo videos:

•••Eurorack module while still a guitar pedal.

4 CV inputs work on a positive +5 voltage. Safe to run higher voltages in but you wont notice much change past 5volts.

CV Control:

Hurt“, “Pain“, “Feedback OSC“, and “Distortion Out” all have independent CV controls.

Hurt” works as a Hi-Pass. “Pain” works as a low pass. Both of these tone controls are tied to gain stages. Changing these also affect the amount of gain passing to the next gain stage. This produces a more chaotic form of tone control and a wide range of textures. “Feedback OSC” is a noise making function that can produce sounds ranging from low pulses or bit crunch to tunable wha-screaming self oscillation. The tone of the Feedback OSC is greatly dependent on Hurt and Pain controls. “Distortion Out” is the volume of the distortion pedal. It works like a basic VCA. The Distortion Out is independent from the “Bleed Out” that functions as a clean pass circuit. Ideal for mixing distortion with synths or anything from vocals to drum sounds.

The new input impedance knob: reduces the amount of signal hitting the distortion circuit.
Concept: The clean signal pass provides a way to keep the fidelity of the original signal intact while mixing the distorted signal over it.

Function: ***This is a high gain distortion pedal. Please expect it to behave as such. In short it will amplify line noise. Moog products tend to be very clean. Dave Smith synths such as the Pro2 tend to have a higher noise floors. While no signal is being run through it the noise floor will be amplified. If a square wave CV signal is left on you may hear “CV tick” as the transistors switch from open to closed.

HDF Euro Pedal

Hyde Distortion Filter 2.0

In stock takes a day or so for us to build if we run out.

Price: $329/$565
Domestic shipping: $free
International Priority Shipping: $39
Requires an 18volt power supply with a negative tip that can deliver at least 150ma. (Not included.)

**International shipping charges are estimated. We will invoice you for the shipping once we can determine the exact cost to your country. Feel free to message us with any questions.

One or Two?

•••Euro Rack Pedal only! Sorry guitar people this pedal only has 1/8th inch jacks. All jacks are on the top side/face of the pedal. It is intended to connect to your euro rack system or line level instruments.
The Hyde Distortion Filter is taken directly from the Jekyll n Hyde Dual filter box and cast into a durable aluminum pedal enclosure. This is a distortion box with an active Low Pass (Diode Ladder) Filter and enhanced resonant feedback. A very slow drifting LFO modulates the filter frequency.

2.0 has bunch more CV flexibility.

[list_circle]

  • An inverted LPF control. Send a positive saw tooth wave and the response will be in reverse.
  • Resonance control for those deep clamped down filter harmonics.
  • A low cut (HPF) to sweep out the low end for creative mixing and layering.
  • Mid range distortion enhancement. Makes the distortion more dominating
  • Each new CV has a corresponding responsive LED.

[/list_circle]

I’ve also added a distortion bypass toggle to provide an alternative clean input to the filter.

“Active” LED is responsive to input signal. Active LED is bypassed when clean input is enabled.

The Hyde Distortion filter is perfect for creating dark textures and soundscapes. Tune the resonant feedback to match your harmonic droning or wall of noise. Use two boxes to create deep stereo textures. Turn a synth with no personality into a monster.

***Orders may take 1-2 days depending on availability.

Things I enjoy about this pedal:

[list_arrow]

  • The sound of the filter! Smooth and dark.
  • The distortion is not high gain. Works well with noisy synths.
  • Enhanced resonant feedback for more expressive tones
  • Small compact size
  • Pre-filter distortion and Post overdrive for gain recovery
  • Post germanium clipping/saturation
  • CV filter control, use modular gear to ….modulate!
  • Slow drifting LFO modulation keeps an otherwise stagnate signal alive.
  • True Bypass

[/list_arrow]

The “Active” LED responds to signal input as you feed sound into it.

• Knob controls:

Up: Pre-Distortion
Hyde: Filter
Fortis: Resonance
Down: Post-Drive
Nefras: LFO Modulation
“Y” LED: LFO Pulse
Blas: LFO Amount
Zeal: LFO Speed
React: Germanium Clipping
**Requires a regulate 18volt DC Supply. Standard negative tip with a min of 150ma. (not included) Will run on 12volts for a dirtier sound. Lower voltage will affect the smoothness of the filter.

***All purchases done through Paypal. Units are always shipped ASAP. Please note when purchasing from eBay shipping charges may be vary.

***I’ve had a lot of requests for a smaller version of the EFC.  This one is only 4.5″ x 3.5″. Unlike the original EFC this one has both stomps switches and the knobs now function in a “conventional direction” I know that confused a lot of new users in the beginning. EFC Vintage 3565 Domes

Electron Fuzz Custom with vintage dome transistors

Still a very limited run. Looks like we are able to build another 7 units. Production on them begins next week, and should be able to ship shortly after. Expect delivery in about two weeks from your time of order.

Price: $259
Domestic Shipping: Free
Pre-Order here:

Our most popular pedal but with vintage dome transistors. In this variant the audio path contains 5 vintage dome 2n3565 transistors from approximately the 1970s. Tried to get an exact date but info on the origins of these are scarce. These same transistors have been used for some classic vintage fuzz face pedals. But please remember this pedal is not a fuzz face.

The vintage dome transistors give the pedal a “smoother sound”. Thats the only way I can describe it. Same great character and dynamics but “different”. Sporting the limited edition artwork, this will be a short run while transistor supply lasts.

I have a couple now ready to go now. If the first few go please allow a day or two before shipping as we sometimes build on demand. Stock is limited.

Things I personally enjoy about Electron Fuzz (EFC) pedal:

  • Fuzzy to crunchy tones
  • Wide range of possible textures and character
  • Expressive distortion oscillations
  • Feedback noise loop for unusual sound design
  • Extremely high gain for recording direct to your DAW
  • Use with guitars and keyboards
  • VU meter responds to your playing in erratic ways
  • Can make drums sound aggressive and distorted without being “Hurty”

The Electron Fuzz “Custom” is an extremely high gain distortion. Seriously, normal volume setting is at about 10% of its full output potential. Here is a great demo video from the “Pedal and Effects” youtube channel featuring Alessandro Cortini of NIN, Sonoio and Modwheelmood.

Please read the brief history of the Electron Fuzz here.

Please read:

Due to increased costs of the meter and other raw good we are discontinuing this product. The smaller euro-pedal version will continue to be available. I really love this pedal design. Fact of the matter is that when we order the meters there are always ones that don’t meet retail standards. Sometimes its minor scrapes or marks. Other times its smudges that won’t wipe of the plastic glass. Since we buy these from overseas in smaller quantities than major brands, it makes it incredibly hard and costly to return them. The current tariff situation has also not resolved its self.

That may be by design. Offer a full refund but you have to return the items. Shipping is $$$.

…But what ever reason it adds up. I find myself working for less than minimum wage 😂 …QC has been an ever increasing issue since covid. It’s like everything got sloppier and less care goes in to manufacturing. It would be a lot different if there wasn’t waste within every order and I could count on knowing what I’m paying for will arrive 100% perfect.

Legacy post begins here

It’s finally here, the official Hyde Distortion Filter with an illuminated VU meter. I’ve had a lot of requests to mod and illuminate vintage meters and its not often possible. So after careful consideration we made this alternative. I feel this maintains the image and quality I’m striving for. It comes in ether European Beech in a dark finish or natural oiled walnut.

*some meters may not have the “ashdown” branding.

The circuit is the same Hyde Distortion Filter found on the now discontinued Jekyll n Hyde dual filter boxes and the smaller euro pedal. This version is a step up for folks who would like easier interfacing with standard instruments such as keyboards, drum machines and other guitar pedals while still maintaining eurorack style CV control. It has 1/4″ jacks for the in/out audio signal on the back and an additional LFO out on the top panel. The LFO out can also be used as a CV input for the LPF (low pass filter) the filter will respond differently than with the dedicated LPF CV jack on the front panel.

But what is a Hyde Distortion Filter?

This is a low pass (all analog) diode ladder filter with two distinct pre-distortion circuits. Depending on how the knob is set there is a third district sound where the two signals meet.

This is a lower gain distortion so it works well with noisier synths. Since the filter is being overdriven by the pre-distortions you get a very unusual tonal quality. Tone can be affected by increasing or decreasing the output of whatever instrument or pedal you’re feeding into it.

You can bypass the distortions for a clean input. It has a very slow drifting LFO to keep the filter from sitting in a static position. There is a particular “worble” to this circuit. Much like vintage gear there is a touch of instability. You would hear this predominately when cranking up the resonance and clamping down the filter. Something not easily achieved with plugins or soft synths.

Knob controls:

Up: Pre-Distortion
Hyde: Filter
Fortis: Resonance
Down: Post-Drive
Nefras: LFO Modulation
“Y” LED: LFO Pulse
Blas: LFO Amount
Zeal: LFO Speed
React: Germanium Clipping

**Requires a regulate 18volt DC Supply. Standard negative tip with a min of 150ma. (not included) I recommend this one: the ECB004 You can buy it directly from Sweetwater.

The Hyde Distortion Filter can run on lower voltages for a dirtier sound. For instance a 12volt supply that can provide enough current will drastically change the sound. The lower voltage will affect the smoothness of the filter. Experimenting with lower voltages will not damage anything. Just don’t use more than 18volts.

Mig Fuzz SE

The Mig Fuzz Special Edition

Price: $299
Domestic shipping: $free
International Shipping: $35 (I will invoice you separately for the shipping)
***International shipping is a flat rate.

Got a couple in stock ready to ship.

***Please Read: We put our Mig Fuzz into an aluminum box. We have had many requests for a more durable “non-wood” version. After receiving a custom order for one we decided it was time to make this available. Same circuit as in the wood box version but we added 2 additional mods. In the mixable parallel circuit I made the clean gain stage adjustable and added some diode clipping on a potentiometer.  If you dial in only the parallel circuit and turn the diode clipping up it will give a completely different sounding pedal. This adds more tonal possibilities to an already versatile pallet of possible sounds.

Be advised this is a large pedal: 4 5/8ths” by 7 1/4th”  Price includes 2-3day priority sipping anywhere in the USA. We will cover half the international shipping to make it easier for our friends overseas!

This pedal also uses some unique vintage parts. I’m not sure how many more of the wire wound resistors we can get at the moment. I was lucky to get the last batch. If needed we can replace those with standard resistors but I’d rather not.  – Johnathan

Custom Etched Mig Fuzz in vertical layout.

More about the Mig Fuzz:

The newly redesigned Mig Fuzz is a classic 4 stage cascading amplifier distortion circuit with a mid range tone control featuring three very useful mods. This unit operates on a standard 9volt power supply (not included)

Mod one: (1st toggle) First stage clipping bypass. When active the tone sounds a little warmer. Its not a drastic change but a seasoned musician will notice the difference when playing.

Mod two: (2nd Toggle) Tone stack toggle greatly changes sound of tone stack and gives the pedal a more classic “Tone Bender” sound.

migfuzzhweb
migfuzzcardweb

Mod three:
(Mix Knob) This is a repeating theme with RML pedals. It provides a mix between the main distortion and a more gentler overdrive signal. This gives you the option to mix in that more solid signal with your fully distorted signal creating a nice pallet of tonal possibilities. If you love the tone of your amp you don’t have to choose between one or the other. This is a highly recommended pedal for recording.

Using some very special vintage NOS parts to create a modern classic:

SovieCapColorSM

The Mig Fuzz uses a NOS (new old stock) Soviet capacitor at the heart of the tone stack. The parts are pre tested for accuracy and hand selected. Parts like this are not something you will find in other Fx pedals. We believe the insides should be as unique as the outsides The Mig Fuzz also uses 2 wire wound thimble resistors in the input and output paths. An Allen-Bradley carbon resistor guides your instruments signal in and through a slightly beefier .22uf capacitor to give a little more oomph on the input. (The original version used a vintage .22uf capacitor but those are no longer available.)

OutputResistorsColorSM

***Retro Mechanical Labs distortion boxes are designed to look like old test equipment of the 1950s while providing a modern sound using a unique combination of vintage parts when possible. Old stock antique meters are for look and feel only and may very in performance.

By request we took two Electron fuzz Custom (euro pedal) units and put them side by side into one box. This is great for anyone who wants to do some serious “stereo” analog distortion. All 1/8″ jacks. Use a standard 1/4″ to 1/8th” cable to operate with synths, drum machines or your DAW. When using with eurorack we suggest using a GPI (Guitar Pedal Interface) module for best results. If your into extreme sports try running one EFCcv into the other for total decimation.

It 12.5″ x 5.5″ in size. Just slightly larger than an iMac keyboard

EFCcvEuro5

More about the EFCcv euro pedal…

•••Euro Rack Pedal only! Sorry guitar people this pedal only has  1/8th inch jacks. All jacks are on the top side/face of the pedal. It is intended to connect to your euro rack system. 4 CV inputs work on a positive +5 voltage. Safe to run higher voltages in but you wont notice much change past 5volts. CV Control:Hurt“, “Pain“, “Feedback OSC“, and “Distortion Out” all have independent CV controls. “Hurt” works as a Hi-Pass. More about the Electron Fuzz Custom: The Electron Fuzz “Custom” is an extremely high gain distortion. About the GPI eurorack module

The RML “GPI” or (Guitar Pedal Interface) is designed to bridge guitar pedal world with modular synth world. An 8HP eurorack unit with two attenuators for sending a reduced signal to guitar pedals for better dynamic response and two pre-amps that boost that lower volume signal (from guitar pedal) back to eurorack levels. Each pre-amp splits the output signal into two patchable outs for creative routing options into other modules.

Power: 10.5mA+/8.6mA-

[list_arrow]

  • 2 units per module allowing for use with stereo pedals.
  • Use the pre-amps to boost other low level signals like line level gear. Outboard synths and drum machines.
  • Use the attenuators to reduce control voltages being sent from other modules
  • Plug your guitar right in to the GPI using 1/4 to 1/8 cables
  • LEDs flash in response to the signal being boosted by the pre-amps. A good indicator on how hard your driving the signal.
  • Very low power consumption.

[/list_arrow]

A couple of random thought on the design:
There are many “Send and Return” modules available, all mono. With this one I wanted to make something available that could handle stereo pedals (or line level gear) without having to buy multiple units. Along the way I decided that having 1/4″ cables hanging off the eurorack seemed bulky and cumbersome so I went with 1/8 (3.5mm) jacks. 1/4 to 1/8 cables have the same construction as eurorack cables and can be found at places like Perfect Circuit Audio at a very affordable prices.

After building the first prototype I quickly found that just using the pre-amp worked great for boosting the Buchla audio level up to normal levels compared to my DPO and Lifeforms. Routing my Moog though the attenuation and into the pre-amp worked like a charm. Having this simple but versatile tool in my rack has definitely been enjoyable. Not only can I now use all those old guitar pedals with my system, but external keyboards I hadn’t considered are now an option.

For your considerations. A Hyde/EFCcv distortion box. Analog ladder filter on the left. Analog distortion on the right. The wood is European Beech stained red mahogany and hand distressed by various instruments of destruction. When I’m gone I hope I am remembered for my love of wood boxes.

I’ve attached a few photos of this specific box. The wood grain is very nice. And of course the sound is curated just as carefully. Enjoy- Johnathan

For your consideration, a very nice oiled walnut dual distortion box. These are normally special order only, but we got a little breathing room. I think I may have one more of these panels left after this one. I will not be restocking this color option after they are gone. The Nuclear Winter White is great for low light situations or for when you’re trying to make your studio a little less drab.

The cut of wood is very nice. Light to dark on the sides and a rich color pattern on the front.

Last one! This is indeed the last of this format. I don’t have plans to re-stock the panels which would take a redesign of the PCB. I’ll be making some different boxes in the future. We are offering Free Domestic shipping to anywhere in the US and we cover half the shipping to anyone outside the US.

A FREE GPI (Guitar Pedal Interface) eurorack module is included with your purchase so that you can integrate it into your eurorack system.

For consideration, a Large Format Electron Fuzz Custom in a distressed wood box.

I haven’t had one of these available for a while. European Beech stained Red Mahogany.

All in and out jacks are 1/4″. Perfect for interfacing with larger modular systems. You can still interface it with eurorack. but you’ll just have to use 1/4″ to 1/8″ cables. Use something like this! I always recommend using one of our GPI (Guitar Pedal Interface) Modules with modular systems for best results.

Panel is hand drilled, wood box hand crafted and distressed in painful ways.

Very snappy vintage meter. Please be aware that all vintage meters show signs of age and may contain a ghost or two. They are very old. The meter on this one is military quality.

This is our flagship distortion. Its worked its way into many incredible music acts and studios across the world. Part of our legacy.

Some photos, I’ve attached one next to a Metal Zone for scale. This is a larger pedal.

More about the EFCcv pedal:

****This is an advanced modded version of the regular Electron Fuzz Custom. The “EFCcv”  has a number of features not available in the aluminum etched boxed versions.  With the addition of 4 Control Voltage inputs to control the major features the sonic possibilities have been even further expanded.

***Control voltage features. +5 volts controls “Hurt” “Pain” “Feedback Noise OSC” and “Distortion output” the EFCcv also has a new input attenuation knob.

BleedOut

The inputs are large format 1/4″. The top panel is a very thick 1/8th inch aluminum plate. the EFCcv Requires a standard 9volt power supply (not included)

“Distortion Out” is the independent distortion volume. The “Output” CV controls the distortion out and works as a simple VCA. “Hurt” and “Pain” are tone controls tied into different gain stages. Both are controllable via CV.

hurt

The “Bleed Out” knob controls a clean mix. If your using this with keyboards or with guitar and wish to maintain the integrity and warmth of your original signal you can mix in a separate boosted clean signal. Both clean and distorted signals can be controlled separately. This works very well with bass guitar and helps retain the low end.

The “Decay” toggle engages a couple of germanium diodes. They add a saturation to your clean signal only. Adds a nice flavor when mixing that clean signal back in with the fully distorted signal.

FCOSC

The “FB OSC” or “Feedback oscillation” can make the pedal sound almost 8bit or add some interesting screeching characteristics to your sound. This effect is still separate from the clean mix increasing the ability to add texture to a warmer boosted signal. The CV control can create ramps up or down in pitch.

Please read:

The circuit is the same Hyde Distortion Filter found on the now discontinued Jekyll n Hyde dual filter boxes and the smaller Hyde DF euro pedal with the expanded CV. There is just two of everything.

We recently had an order for two Hyde Distortion Filter euro pedals so we custom made this dual box. By rotating the Serpa Custom box vertically we were able to fit two of the circuits side by side. It’s a different look and takes up less space left to right.

Since we are no longer taking orders for the Jekyll n Hyde dual filter box this seems like a nice alternative for folks that would still like a dual mono filter setup.

Unique to this version is an input link toggle. Use this to patch in a single mono audio source and send it to each filter. **Probably not recommended to link inputs while using the unit with a stereo signal. You may get phase cancellation!

And a “Misc” mod. The Misc mod is similar to the Misc mod on the original Jekyll n Hyde Serpa box that functioned as a cross resonance feedback mod. I say “similar” because the mod points were different on the Jekyll filter. Here we have two identical filters so I’ve only got one position to link the resonant feeds back. But it sounds e’ffin cool. It produces some unpredictable overdriven distortion that varies depending on what your feeding into each filter.

Two LFO outs. One for each slow drifting LFO.

LFO out can also be used as a CV input for the LPF (low pass filter) the filter will respond differently than with the dedicated LPF CV jack on the front panel. They can be patched to any of the CV inputs on ether filter.

***Please read: I wanted to do something special for our 1000th box. It’s a commemorative milestone in RMLfx history. Never expected we would end up building this many custom boxes. So for your consideration here is a one of a kind one off distortion pedal.

The original Sprague TEL-OHMIKE TO-3 unit was in an old beat up metal box so I crafted a solid vintage style box out of red oak. No plywood or particle board. The entire box weights a little over 7 lbs. We added a nice leather handle thats fully functional. About 13.75″ wide by 10.5″ tall.

**This is a high gain distortion circuit. With guitars (At its max settings) you might get feedback oscillation depending on the pickups you’re using. However that feedback does not exist when using this with synths and drum machines. So while there should be plenty of usable settings with guitar and bass I recommend this for studio and experimental use. Live situations may be unruly.

The front of the panel shows its age with lots of nicks and scratches. This was a 1950s unit so you’re looking at 70+ years of age. The plastic cover over the center dial is warped and yellowed. Old adhesives mark the surface of the panel. Original knobs are set on the potentiometers. The on/off toggle turns the unit off. The “paper-mica” switch adds a diode symmetrical clipping.

We cleaned it intensely but left the residue marks to keep that vintage patina. In/Out jacks placed on the lower left hand side so the unit can sit upright in your studio. The old tube is back lit with green LEDs when the circuit is active. When the x1000 toggle is engaged additional red LEDs are added to the mix. The giant knob in the middle is the feedback oscillation. One of the defining sounds of the EFC pedal series.

I will laser etch a legend card that clearly defines each knob and switch.

The internal circuit is our Electron Fuzz Custom “Retro” high gain distortion. Unlike the standard smaller pedal it has a cleaner parallel mix (knob left of “selector”). The “Bleed” as its called is there to mix in some fidelity after you’ve distorted and compressed your signal. There is an additional “original out” that taps the EFC circuit before the internal mixing circuit. The vintage meter is also fully functional.

One of the hardest boxes for me to photograph and available for your consideration.

Please Read:

***If you try and purchase this and the link doesn’t work, its likely it has already sold.

All analog distortion ladder filter combined with an all analog high gain distortion. Set up to crossover with eurorack systems.

This in an “Absence of Light” red oak box. The red oak has a very deep grain. Combined with the limited edition Nuclear Winter White panel makes a striking contrast. Also easier to see in the dark. At least the panel is. The wood seems to absorb the light.

More on the Hyde/EFCcv combo box:

All 1/8″ jacks for interfacing with modular synth systems. The output is still line level so we recommend using these with a GPI module or something similar for attenuation and reamping to eurorack levels. Or just use it as normal with synths and drum machines. You just need the 1/8″ to 1/4″ jacks sold here.

The Hyde Distortion Filter is one half of the famous Jekyll n Hyde box but with some enhancements.

  • Inverted Filter CV
  • Resonance CV
  • Hi Pass CV
  • Midrange Boost CV
  • Distortion circuit bypass

The Electron Fuzz Custom is a high gain distortion that sounds exceptionally good with synths and drum machines. More info here.

The HDF sounds very good going into the Electron Fuzz Custom CV distortion offering a huge range of tone shaping possibilities. You can also run the EFCcv into the Hyde DF. There is no wrong way to use this. They also operate as two individual pedals.

Videos coming soon. You can find a lot of demes of the individual pedals and a few of the combo on my Instagram page.

This is a one-off Electron Fuzz Custom Retro “mini” with a sexy vintage mini meter. The box is a heavy maple stained mahogany red.

For someone who would like a top shelf version of our most popular pedal in a smaller foot print.

Much smaller and closer in size to the aluminum box version. Sounds amazing with synths, drum machines and guitar.

I’ve included a shot next to a Big Muff for scale.

I like this smaller version quite a bit but the mini aircraft style meters are hard to come by ($$) and the size is a little harder to craft on the table saw. This one was made with our last 4.5″x6″ panel. I have no plans to make more of these for some time.

The top panel is a very hefty 8th of an inch thick piece of metal. It’s difficult to punch through cleanly without ruining our punch we use for the smaller VU meters. So we opted to hand drill a proper hole for a slightly larger vintage meter. The result is striking.

Please note this does not have the clean circuit “bleed” like on the larger “Retro” version.

ABOUT THE ELECTRON FUZZ CUSTOM

The Electron Fuzz Custom  “RETRO” houses the same circuit as the aluminum pedal version but is placed in a classy wood box. ***We have added a diode clipping mod just above the meter.

This is an extremely high gain distortion.

Here is a pretty cool demo video from the “Pedal and Effects” youtube channel featuring Alessandro Cortini of NIN, Sonoio and Modwheelmood.

[list_circle]Things I personally enjoy about this pedal:

  • Fuzzy to crunchy tones
  • Wide range of possible textures and character
  • Expressive distortion oscillations
  • Feedback noise loop for unusual sound design
  • Extremely high gain for recording direct to your DAW
  • Use with guitars and keyboards
  • VU meter responds to your playing

[/list_circle]

The red LED  switches on when boost mode is enabled.
