Please Read:

I built this for myself. I’m constantly testing pedals for quality control before we send them out.

This requires a number of sound sources to test against. I often test our filter pedals with a wide open OSC from one of my Moogs, I use a DSI Pro2 to help with balancing meters, I patch in a guitar or bass for other situations. For monitoring sometimes I’m using my desk mixer. Sometimes I go directly to my UAD Apollo interface, sometimes guitar amps. Because of all that I’ve had a pile of cables and power supplies hanging over the side of my music desk.

So officially I present to you: The Rotary Patch Box or “RPB” for short. 4 ins / 4 outs with an effect send loop. A total of 10 patch points. Each connection is selected by 2 (4 position) rotary switches. LEDs indicate what you’ve selected.

This pedal requires an 18volt supply with a negative tip. An 18volt power supply will not only power the LEDs, but its DC output will be conditioned with a number of choice capacitors to help clean up any unwanted noise. I also regulate a perfect DC 9volt output. You can use both the 18volt and the 9 volt outputs at the same time. The amount of power you can deliver depends on the supply your using. I recommend the Dunlop ECB004. (Not included)

I’ll include a DC to DC extension cable to ship with this unit.

So how do I use mine? …I took the liberty of etchings my own labels as an example.

Quite possible the most useful box I own at the moment.

Here is a FAQ:

  • Why do people need this? I see a lot of people with satellite gear sitting off to the side of their studio setups. This will not only limit the chaos of having multiple patch cables that need to be plugged and un plugged, it also helps keep things organized. Switching between sources and destinations is a breeze.
  • Why is there a send/return on a stomp switch? I enjoy being able to experiment with pedals while recording music. This lets me send anything running through the RPB into an effects loop. It also provides a way to “hot swap” pedals without damaging my monitors. Simply bypass the effects loop and no more annoying pops and ground buzzes when changing pedals or guitars.
  • Why not just use a patch bay? I Needed something more instantaneous. Studies show that if something takes longer than a a few seconds to set up the current generations looses interest and starts flipping through TikTok. I do have a patch bay too. But I don’t have a 19″ rack on the auxiliary side of the studio. One of the outputs of my RPB actually goes to that.
  • Why not use a line mixer? Any powered device adds noise. I never record through a line mixer into my DAW. I always patch directly. Having my auxiliary instruments set up with a line mixer would mean unpatching them and then re-patching them into my DAW for a direct signal when needed.
  • Is this MONO? Yes, I primarily use a lot of mono synths. I am considering making a stereo version. Let me know if thats something you’d like.
  • What kind of electronics are in the audio path? NOTHING. Inside the box are direct mechanical connections. No buffers, no boosts. You don’t actually need to plug it in for the routing to work. A power supply only powers the LEDs and power extensions.
  • Why is there “Power Extension”? When using pedals this provides a quick way to power them without having to set up different power supplies. I personally switch between 18volt and 9volt supplies constantly. By providing a regulated 9volt output I have eliminated one power adaptor from my mess on the floor.

Please read:

Due to increased costs of the meter and other raw good we are discontinuing this product. The smaller euro-pedal version will continue to be available. I really love this pedal design. Fact of the matter is that when we order the meters there are always ones that don’t meet retail standards. Sometimes its minor scrapes or marks. Other times its smudges that won’t wipe of the plastic glass. Since we buy these from overseas in smaller quantities than major brands, it makes it incredibly hard and costly to return them. The current tariff situation has also not resolved its self.

That may be by design. Offer a full refund but you have to return the items. Shipping is $$$.

…But what ever reason it adds up. I find myself working for less than minimum wage 😂 …QC has been an ever increasing issue since covid. It’s like everything got sloppier and less care goes in to manufacturing. It would be a lot different if there wasn’t waste within every order and I could count on knowing what I’m paying for will arrive 100% perfect.

Legacy post begins here

It’s finally here, the official Hyde Distortion Filter with an illuminated VU meter. I’ve had a lot of requests to mod and illuminate vintage meters and its not often possible. So after careful consideration we made this alternative. I feel this maintains the image and quality I’m striving for. It comes in ether European Beech in a dark finish or natural oiled walnut.

*some meters may not have the “ashdown” branding.

The circuit is the same Hyde Distortion Filter found on the now discontinued Jekyll n Hyde dual filter boxes and the smaller euro pedal. This version is a step up for folks who would like easier interfacing with standard instruments such as keyboards, drum machines and other guitar pedals while still maintaining eurorack style CV control. It has 1/4″ jacks for the in/out audio signal on the back and an additional LFO out on the top panel. The LFO out can also be used as a CV input for the LPF (low pass filter) the filter will respond differently than with the dedicated LPF CV jack on the front panel.

But what is a Hyde Distortion Filter?

This is a low pass (all analog) diode ladder filter with two distinct pre-distortion circuits. Depending on how the knob is set there is a third district sound where the two signals meet.

This is a lower gain distortion so it works well with noisier synths. Since the filter is being overdriven by the pre-distortions you get a very unusual tonal quality. Tone can be affected by increasing or decreasing the output of whatever instrument or pedal you’re feeding into it.

You can bypass the distortions for a clean input. It has a very slow drifting LFO to keep the filter from sitting in a static position. There is a particular “worble” to this circuit. Much like vintage gear there is a touch of instability. You would hear this predominately when cranking up the resonance and clamping down the filter. Something not easily achieved with plugins or soft synths.

Knob controls:

Up: Pre-Distortion
Hyde: Filter
Fortis: Resonance
Down: Post-Drive
Nefras: LFO Modulation
“Y” LED: LFO Pulse
Blas: LFO Amount
Zeal: LFO Speed
React: Germanium Clipping

**Requires a regulate 18volt DC Supply. Standard negative tip with a min of 150ma. (not included) I recommend this one: the ECB004 You can buy it directly from Sweetwater.

The Hyde Distortion Filter can run on lower voltages for a dirtier sound. For instance a 12volt supply that can provide enough current will drastically change the sound. The lower voltage will affect the smoothness of the filter. Experimenting with lower voltages will not damage anything. Just don’t use more than 18volts.

For your considerations. A Hyde/EFCcv distortion box. Analog ladder filter on the left. Analog distortion on the right. The wood is European Beech stained red mahogany and hand distressed by various instruments of destruction. When I’m gone I hope I am remembered for my love of wood boxes.

I’ve attached a few photos of this specific box. The wood grain is very nice. And of course the sound is curated just as carefully. Enjoy- Johnathan

More info on the Hyde Distortion/ EFCcv combo box:

***Please read: Finally the completed vision. All analog filter and distortion. The Hyde Distortion Filter and the Electron Fuzz Custom CV together in one beautifully hand crafted box. The width is just 12.25″ wide and sits 5.5″ deep. Just slightly wider than an iMac keyboard.

All 1/8″ jacks for interfacing with modular synth systems. The output is still line level so we recommend using these with a GPI module or something similar for attenuation and reamping to eurorack levels. Or just use it as normal with synths and drum machines. You just need the 1/8″ to 1/4″ jacks sold here.

The Hyde Distortion Filter is one half of the famous Jekyll n Hyde box but with some enhancements.

  • Filter CV
  • Inverted Filter CV
  • Resonance CV
  • Hi Pass CV
  • Midrange Boost CV
  • Distortion circuit bypass

The Electron Fuzz Custom is a high gain distortion that sounds exceptionally good with synths and drum machines. More info here.

The HDF sounds very good going into the Electron Fuzz Custom CV distortion offering a huge range of tone shaping possibilities. You can also run the EFCcv into the Hyde DF. There is no wrong way to use this. They also operate as two individual pedals.

You can find a lot of demos of the individual pedals and a few of the combo on my Instagram page.

For your consideration, a very nice oiled walnut dual distortion box. These are normally special order only, but we got a little breathing room. I think I may have one more of these panels left after this one. I will not be restocking this color option after they are gone. The Nuclear Winter White is great for low light situations or for when you’re trying to make your studio a little less drab.

The cut of wood is very nice. Light to dark on the sides and a rich color pattern on the front.

A little background:

By request we took two Electron fuzz Custom (euro pedal) units and put them side by side into one box. This is great for anyone who wants to do some serious “stereo” analog distortion. All 1/8″ jacks. Use a standard 1/4″ to 1/8th” cable to operate with synths, drum machines or your DAW. When using with eurorack we suggest using a GPI (Guitar Pedal Interface) module for best results. If your into extreme sports try running one EFCcv into the other for total decimation.

It 12.5″ x 5.5″ in size. Just slightly larger than an iMac keyboard

EFCcvEuro5

More about the EFCcv euro pedal…

•••Euro Rack Pedal only! Sorry guitar people this pedal only has  1/8th inch jacks. All jacks are on the top side/face of the pedal. It is intended to connect to your euro rack system. 4 CV inputs work on a positive +5 voltage. Safe to run higher voltages in but you wont notice much change past 5volts. CV Control:Hurt“, “Pain“, “Feedback OSC“, and “Distortion Out” all have independent CV controls. “Hurt” works as a Hi-Pass. “Pain” works as a low pass. Both of these tone controls are tied to gain stages. Changing these also affect the amount of gain passing to the next gain stage. This produces a more chaotic form of tone control and a wide range of textures. “Feedback OSC” is a noise making function that can produce sounds ranging from low pulses or bit crunch to tunable wha-screaming self oscillation. The tone of the Feedback OSC is greatly dependent on Hurt and Pain controls. “Distortion Out” is the volume of the distortion pedal. It works like a basic VCA. The Distortion Out is independent from the “Bleed Out” that functions as a clean pass circuit. Ideal for mixing distortion with synths or anything from vocals to drum sounds. The new input impedance knob: reduces the amount of signal hitting the distortion circuit. Concept: The clean signal pass provides a way to keep the fidelity of the original signal intact while mixing the distorted signal over it. Function: ***This is a high gain distortion pedal. Please expect it to behave as such. In short it will amplify line noise. Moog products tend to be very clean. Dave Smith synths such as the Pro2 tend to have a higher noise floors. While no signal is being run through it the noise floor will be amplified. If a square wave CV signal is left on you may hear “CV tick” as the transistors switch from open to closed. More about the Electron Fuzz Custom: The Electron Fuzz “Custom” is an extremely high gain distortion. Seriously, normal volume setting is at about 10% of its full output potential. Two gain/tone controls “Hurt” and “Pain” give a variety of tone textures and a feedback noise loop can be adjusted to add a very gritty almost 8-bit sound or a squelching scream. (Great for droning or well crafted solos and recording). The extra stomp switch adds 2 more additional gain stages and a boost of high end to the sound. Best of all the distortion oscillates when notes are held adding a new level of expression.

Here is a great demo video of the non-cv EFC from the “Pedal and Effects” youtube channel featuring Alessandro Cortini of NIN, Sonoio and Modwheelmood.

Please read the brief history of the Electron Fuzz here.

Things I personally enjoy about this pedal:

  • Modulate that crazy feedback OSC
  • Fuzzy to crunchy tones
  • Wide range of possible textures and character
  • Expressive distortion oscillations
  • Feedback noise loop for unusual sound design
  • Extremely high gain for recording direct to your DAW
  • Use with guitars and keyboards
  • VU meter responds to your playing

The red LED switches on when boost mode is enabled. A convent way to know where you are when playing. • Knob controls: A unique approach to tone control… Hurt: Controls the gain of 3rd gain stage. Lowering the gain will also reduce low end. Pain: Controls the gain of the 2nd transistor gain stage. Lowering the gain will reduce high end. Output: Volume/saturation. Take some of the edge off the mix or crank the pain and hurt all the way for a big, dirty, crunchy fuzz. FB Noise: Adjusts the amount of feedback in the circuit for noise making. Creates a weird octave mod fx.• Switch controls:Low cut toggle: Cuts the low end for a slightly less bassy more gated sound. x1000 gain: On left stomp switch. This takes your sound through an addition 2 transistor gain stages and pushes the electrons way past 11! The booster switch adds a loud and dirty, thrash crunch to this versatile pedal. Incredible for feedback noise and FX textures. Can cause the parasitic frequency oscillation but sounds awesome while playing. True Bypass: Lets you play through the pedal. • Meter: Responds to your playing, and reflects first gain stage transistor distortion. Illuminates when active.

For your consideration:

We don’t make this version anymore. So these are few and far between. This is a panel that came in for a replacement. Nothing wrong with it. Customer had wanted the mini VU meter version. I’ve had it in the shop for a while and decided to put it into a b-stock wood box I was saving for myself. I was kinda wanting to keep the whole thing for myself.

It’s an awesome piece of wood. But after the glue set the bottom had a slight curve to it. So it didn’t sit totally flat. I shaved off the rubber pads to make it sit level. Easier than re-sanding the bottom and refinishing. So we have knocked a $179 off. Please keep in mind shipping is included in the price for domestic US folks.

The flux meter pulses and strobes to the audio signal. If Blinky and flashing lights bothers you in any way please pass on this item! This configuration was discontinued because they are difficult to build consistently and I had to go through a number of the glass lenses to find some that were perfect enough to use. OCD gets the better of me sometimes.

Perfect for people that like dimly lit studios.

Very hard to capture real life color. Its much more vibrant than that.

Mig Fuzz B-Stock

The Mig Fuzz B-Stock

Price: $280
Domestic shipping: $free
International Shipping: $35 (I will invoice you separately for the shipping)
***International shipping is a flat rate.

Only One.

This item has sold.

For your consideration:

I spend a lot of time trying to make sure everything is perfect. Sometimes mistakes happen. I’m not sure how this happened. A small mark on the lower left of the enclosure. So we are offering this Mig Fuzz at a discount. …It might have just been under the powder coating but I normally look for that.

***Please Read: We put our Mig Fuzz into an aluminum box. We have had many requests for a more durable “non-wood” version. After receiving a custom order for one we decided it was time to make this available. Same circuit as in the wood box version but we added 2 additional mods. In the mixable parallel circuit I made the clean gain stage adjustable and added some diode clipping on a potentiometer.  If you dial in only the parallel circuit and turn the diode clipping up it will give a completely different sounding pedal. This adds more tonal possibilities to an already versatile pallet of possible sounds.

Be advised this is a large pedal: 4 5/8ths” by 7 1/4th”  Price includes 2-3day priority sipping anywhere in the USA. We will cover half the international shipping to make it easier for our friends overseas!

This pedal also uses some unique vintage parts. I’m not sure how many more of the wire wound resistors we can get at the moment. I was lucky to get the last batch. If needed we can replace those with standard resistors but I’d rather not.  – Johnathan

migfuzzvertweb
Custom Etched Mig Fuzz in vertical layout.

More about the Mig Fuzz:

The newly redesigned Mig Fuzz is a classic 4 stage cascading amplifier distortion circuit with a mid range tone control featuring three very useful mods. This unit operates on a standard 9volt power supply (not included)

Mod one: (1st toggle) First stage clipping bypass. When active the tone sounds a little warmer. Its not a drastic change but a seasoned musician will notice the difference when playing.

Mod two: (2nd Toggle) Tone stack toggle greatly changes sound of tone stack and gives the pedal a more classic “Tone Bender” sound.

migfuzzhweb
migfuzzcardweb

Mod three:
(Mix Knob) This is a repeating theme with RML pedals. It provides a mix between the main distortion and a more gentler overdrive signal. This gives you the option to mix in that more solid signal with your fully distorted signal creating a nice pallet of tonal possibilities. If you love the tone of your amp you don’t have to choose between one or the other. This is a highly recommended pedal for recording.

Using some very special vintage NOS parts to create a modern classic:

SovieCapColorSM

The Mig Fuzz uses a NOS (new old stock) Soviet capacitor at the heart of the tone stack. The parts are pre tested for accuracy and hand selected. Parts like this are not something you will find in other Fx pedals. We believe the insides should be as unique as the outsides The Mig Fuzz also uses 2 wire wound thimble resistors in the input and output paths. An Allen-Bradley carbon resistor guides your instruments signal in and through a slightly beefier .22uf capacitor to give a little more oomph on the input. (The original version used a vintage .22uf capacitor but those are no longer available.)

OutputResistorsColorSM

***Retro Mechanical Labs distortion boxes are designed to look like old test equipment of the 1950s while providing a modern sound using a unique combination of vintage parts when possible. Old stock antique meters are for look and feel only and may very in performance.

For your consideration. EFC Studio sn# 067

Our flagship 19″ studio distortion rack with XLR ins/outs.
We no longer take orders for units with vintage meters due to scarcity and time involved. As promised (on rare occasion) we will make one available for a direct purchase. Today is one of those days.

“This is one of the best pieces of gear I’ve ever used/heard! like perfect for what I do.” -John M. 6/29/2024

This EFC Studio sports two vintage art deco meters on the left side is a Simpson Milliamperes

…and on the right is a more rare SWR POWER “Coax Ratiometer”

Each meter has been balanced for closest operation but will still have their own response character. And of course being very old (likely 1960s) they have minor nicks and signs of wear. Maybe even a ghost.

More on the EFC Studio:

The EFC (Electron Fuzz Custom) is a super hi gain distortion with a parallel clean circuit and self oscillating feedback.  The circuit was redesigned to fit the “studio” environment. The Studio version houses two EFC distortions in one 19″ 3u rack. Balanced XLR ins/outs on the back. Linkable Hi-Z inputs in the front.

The EFC distortion is very crunchy due to the way the transistors are biased. On the Studio version I added a new feature. A toggle that can change the biasing to a more conventional response. This is most apparent when using it with guitar or sounds where a longer decay is desired. It makes the notes sustain more.

The EFC Studio is intended to be used on every type of instrument. Guitar, Drums, Synths, Vocals etc. It can be used for stereo processing but is technically dual mono. This gives you better control over the stereo field. Personally I enjoy bus mixing through it. While there is nothing subtle about the EFC circuit, it can be used a very subtle ways.

Key Features:

    • Unconventional tone control: The “Hurt” and “Pain” knobs work as tone controls, but are directly tied to the gain staging. When you adjust one your adjusting the dynamics of the circuit. Not just sweeping out hi or low end. This makes for very interesting textures and a wide range of possible tones.

    • Parallel clean circuit: Use this to mix the original signal under the distortion. Drive the inputs harder and the “Bleed” becomes a softer overdrive.

    • Input attenuation: “Input” attenuates the signal going to the distortion circuit. Less signal means less circuit compression.

    • Balanced ins/outs: XLR ins and outs for studio uses. XLR outputs are active while using the front Hi-Z ins and outs.

    • Linkable Hi-Z inputs: Plug a guitar or synth right into the front. When the inputs are linked a mono signal becomes stereo. It is possible to run the outs in front to an amp or other gear.

    • Universal power: Internal regulated power supply. 85 VAC to 264 VAC. Ideal for international power grids. No wall wart needed.

    • New Biasing mode: For more conventional decay response.

    • Dimensions: 19″ x 5.5″ x 5″ deep.

    • Panel meters: Supports both 2.5″ and 3.5″ panel meters. Look can vary depending on type used. Vintage and NOS panel meters will not match. When possible we will use the same style or manufacturer unless otherwise requested. Extremely mismatched meters my add to a more “Frankenstein-ish” look.

EFC Heathkit Precision

For your consideration. A vintage Heathkit Precision vacuum tube volt meter converted into an Electron Fuzz Custom pedal. This is the standard pedal version. Quite aggressive. A serial numbered ID tag is mounted on the right side indicating it is an authentic member of the RMLfx family.

Two jumbo toggles have been added. One to switch to the x1000 screaming distortion (left side), the other works as a bypass (right side). Another jumbo LED glows to indicate power is connected. The two fancy knobs are the “Hurt” and “Pain” controls. The two lower knobs are the volume and the “Feedback noise”. I will include an card that defines the functions.

This is intended to be a studio piece and is not “Stompable”. But it can sit comfortably on a table for alternative styles table top performances and live in your studio as a secret weapon.

The knobs are all original. In the center is a new toggle switch for the low cut. The meter has a good response and at full volume hovers around the zero’ed center.

Size is about 8″x5″x5″ accounting for the handle and the bezeled meter face.

This light military green vintage box with original knobs and glowing jewel garnered to turn some heads and invoke questions about what it is. As always we do our best to keep the original form without drilling a bunch of holes and ruining the classic feel. While the patina of this box shows its age the unit has been cleaned and restored to the best of our abilities.

This unit is designed to ether sit upright or lay on its back.

In/Outs and power (9volts negative tip) are on the left side of the box. Print is laser etched.

Last one! This is indeed the last of this format. I don’t have plans to re-stock the panels which would take a redesign of the PCB. I’ll be making some different boxes in the future. We are offering Free Domestic shipping to anywhere in the US and we cover half the shipping to anyone outside the US.

A FREE GPI (Guitar Pedal Interface) eurorack module is included with your purchase so that you can integrate it into your eurorack system.

For consideration, a Large Format Electron Fuzz Custom in a distressed wood box.

I haven’t had one of these available for a while. European Beech stained Red Mahogany.

All in and out jacks are 1/4″. Perfect for interfacing with larger modular systems. You can still interface it with eurorack. but you’ll just have to use 1/4″ to 1/8″ cables. Use something like this! I always recommend using one of our GPI (Guitar Pedal Interface) Modules with modular systems for best results.

Panel is hand drilled, wood box hand crafted and distressed in painful ways.

Very snappy vintage meter. Please be aware that all vintage meters show signs of age and may contain a ghost or two. They are very old. The meter on this one is military quality.

This is our flagship distortion. Its worked its way into many incredible music acts and studios across the world. Part of our legacy.

Some photos, I’ve attached one next to a Metal Zone for scale. This is a larger pedal.

More about the EFCcv pedal:

****This is an advanced modded version of the regular Electron Fuzz Custom. The “EFCcv”  has a number of features not available in the aluminum etched boxed versions.  With the addition of 4 Control Voltage inputs to control the major features the sonic possibilities have been even further expanded.

***Control voltage features. +5 volts controls “Hurt” “Pain” “Feedback Noise OSC” and “Distortion output” the EFCcv also has a new input attenuation knob.

BleedOut

The inputs are large format 1/4″. The top panel is a very thick 1/8th inch aluminum plate. the EFCcv Requires a standard 9volt power supply (not included)

“Distortion Out” is the independent distortion volume. The “Output” CV controls the distortion out and works as a simple VCA. “Hurt” and “Pain” are tone controls tied into different gain stages. Both are controllable via CV.

hurt

The “Bleed Out” knob controls a clean mix. If your using this with keyboards or with guitar and wish to maintain the integrity and warmth of your original signal you can mix in a separate boosted clean signal. Both clean and distorted signals can be controlled separately. This works very well with bass guitar and helps retain the low end.

The “Decay” toggle engages a couple of germanium diodes. They add a saturation to your clean signal only. Adds a nice flavor when mixing that clean signal back in with the fully distorted signal.

FCOSC

The “FB OSC” or “Feedback oscillation” can make the pedal sound almost 8bit or add some interesting screeching characteristics to your sound. This effect is still separate from the clean mix increasing the ability to add texture to a warmer boosted signal. The CV control can create ramps up or down in pitch.

Available for your consideration. The final “B-Stock” Jekyll n Hyde Serpa dual filter box.

Please Read:

This is the very last Jekyll n Hyde Dual Filter box. This is technically a “B-Stock” due to a very faint mark on the finish. It’s not really that noticeable and takes turning up the light quite a bit to see. But I can’t ethically pretend it’s not there. 🙂 So its makes down $50.

Sn# 1042 sports a very nice jumbo meter. 1/4″ in and out audio jacks on the back.

I’ve officially discontinued these boxes and we are no longer doing custom orders for them. This will be THE FINAL BOX!

The Jekyll n Hyde box is a dual analog filter box with pre distortions feeding into the filters..

The Jekyll side is a transistor ladder filter with an overdriven pre-drive circuit (adjustable).

The Hyde side is a diode ladder filter with 2 different distortion circuits. A potentiometer brings those together creating a phased combination in the center.

The filters have that natural unstable “worble”. Especially noticeable when cranking up the resonant feedback into self oscillation. Something modern synths don’t have and VST/AU plugins don’t replicate well.

For fun (and sometimes confusion) I’ve added a cross resonance mod that feeds one filters resonance into the opposing circuit and vice versa.

You can find a lot of demes of the individual pedals and a few of the combo on my Instagram page.

Aprox. International Shipping: $39 – $65

Shipping with cream knobs and ox blood red knobs.

This item has sold.

For your consideration:

I’ve got one B- Stock 432k Rev 2.1 at a discounted price. The scuff is along a bottom edge. Not easy to see. I question my sanity for even offering it as a B-Stock. This unit has the 3 oxblood knobs. Same unit that is pictured.

This is the newly redesigned 432k rev2.1 …has a small change from the original. The Transistor drive knob used to be configured with a direct connection to the emitter of a transistor. This created a static sound when turning the knob, much like a finger dragging on a microphone. While everything functioned as designed a few people who didn’t read the manual assumed the potentiometer was “dirty”.

So I rebuilt that gain stage to work with an internal control voltage severing the direct connection with the sound path. The result is a very smooth operation and a better user experience.

More on the 432k rev2:

…Because vintage meters are limited and hard to find here is the “Standard meter” version. Meter is illuminated!
This model has a a couple of different mods not on the normal version. A sustain knob that works much like the sustain on the Muff pedals, additional gain stage clipping for a smoother fuzz. Those mods can drastically change the tone and texture of the pedal.  In addition to the mods I’ve used a different set of transistors to give the unit a slightly different sound than the regular 432k Distortion box. This is a large pedal. Its about the same size foot print as the 5.5×7.5 wood boxes.

…The 432k Distortion box is all about signal routing. One distortion circuit with an active hybrid diode/transistor ladder filter (with resonant feedback) for tone control. Another with a clean pass signal. Both signals are merged together and “glued” through a transistor drive and op amp style fuzz.  Also equipped with CV in for filter control. ***Use a CV to control the filter.
Things I enjoy about this pedal:

  • Hyper Fuzz tone
  • Hybrid Diode/Transistor ladder filter.
  • Enhanced resonant feedback for more expressive tones
  • Clean pass lets you bring a quality signal back into the compressed distortion
  • Op Amp style fuzz at end of signal chain. Dial in harsh tones and smooth them out.
  • Great for guitars and keyboards
  • CV filter control. Use CV in to control filter with modular gear, synth or CV pedal.
  • Low cut toggle for guitar use.
  • True Bypass

• Knob controls:

Distortion: Volume of Distortion
Filter: Filter Frequency
Resonance: Active resonant feedback
Clean: Clean signal
Low Cut: low end roll off
Transistor: Transistor gain/drive
Op Amp: Op Amp Fuzz
Feedback: Noise loop (works best with sequenced sounds)
Output: Volume

**Requires a regulate 18volt DC Supply. Standard negative tip with a min of 150ma. (not included) Will run on 12volts for a dirtier sound. Lower voltage will affect the smoothness of the filter.

***All purchases done through Paypal. Units are always shipped ASAP. Please note when purchasing from eBay shipping charges may be vary.

****International shipping can vary. Typically I will credit back any difference when your unit is ready and I am able to verify exact shipping to your specific location.

Please read:

The circuit is the same Hyde Distortion Filter found on the now discontinued Jekyll n Hyde dual filter boxes and the smaller Hyde DF euro pedal with the expanded CV. There is just two of everything.

We recently had an order for two Hyde Distortion Filter euro pedals so we custom made this dual box. By rotating the Serpa Custom box vertically we were able to fit two of the circuits side by side. It’s a different look and takes up less space left to right.

Since we are no longer taking orders for the Jekyll n Hyde dual filter box this seems like a nice alternative for folks that would still like a dual mono filter setup.

Unique to this version is an input link toggle. Use this to patch in a single mono audio source and send it to each filter. **Probably not recommended to link inputs while using the unit with a stereo signal. You may get phase cancellation!

And a “Misc” mod. The Misc mod is similar to the Misc mod on the original Jekyll n Hyde Serpa box that functioned as a cross resonance feedback mod. I say “similar” because the mod points were different on the Jekyll filter. Here we have two identical filters so I’ve only got one position to link the resonant feeds back. But it sounds e’ffin cool. It produces some unpredictable overdriven distortion that varies depending on what your feeding into each filter.

Two LFO outs. One for each slow drifting LFO.

LFO out can also be used as a CV input for the LPF (low pass filter) the filter will respond differently than with the dedicated LPF CV jack on the front panel. They can be patched to any of the CV inputs on ether filter.

***All purchases done through Paypal. Units are always shipped ASAP.

****International shipping can vary. I will invoice for shipping along with the final payment once your unit is ready to go.

EFC Retro #1000

Electron Fuzz Custom Retro with vintage Sprague TEL-OHMIKE panel in custom red oak box

Price: $799

Only ONE in stock.

***Please read: I wanted to do something special for our 1000th box. It’s a commemorative milestone in RMLfx history. Never expected we would end up building this many custom boxes. So for your consideration here is a one of a kind one off distortion pedal.

The original Sprague TEL-OHMIKE TO-3 unit was in an old beat up metal box so I crafted a solid vintage style box out of red oak. No plywood or particle board. The entire box weights a little over 7 lbs. We added a nice leather handle thats fully functional. About 13.75″ wide by 10.5″ tall.

**This is a high gain distortion circuit. With guitars (At its max settings) you might get feedback oscillation depending on the pickups you’re using. However that feedback does not exist when using this with synths and drum machines. So while there should be plenty of usable settings with guitar and bass I recommend this for studio and experimental use. Live situations may be unruly.

The front of the panel shows its age with lots of nicks and scratches. This was a 1950s unit so you’re looking at 70+ years of age. The plastic cover over the center dial is warped and yellowed. Old adhesives mark the surface of the panel. Original knobs are set on the potentiometers. The on/off toggle turns the unit off. The “paper-mica” switch adds a diode symmetrical clipping.

We cleaned it intensely but left the residue marks to keep that vintage patina. In/Out jacks placed on the lower left hand side so the unit can sit upright in your studio. The old tube is back lit with green LEDs when the circuit is active. When the x1000 toggle is engaged additional red LEDs are added to the mix. The giant knob in the middle is the feedback oscillation. One of the defining sounds of the EFC pedal series.

I will laser etch a legend card that clearly defines each knob and switch.

The internal circuit is our Electron Fuzz Custom “Retro” high gain distortion. Unlike the standard smaller pedal it has a cleaner parallel mix (knob left of “selector”). The “Bleed” as its called is there to mix in some fidelity after you’ve distorted and compressed your signal. There is an additional “original out” that taps the EFC circuit before the internal mixing circuit. The vintage meter is also fully functional.

All analog distortion ladder filter combined with an all analog high gain distortion. Set up to crossover with eurorack systems.

This in an “Absence of Light” red oak box. The red oak has a very deep grain. Combined with the limited edition Nuclear Winter White panel makes a striking contrast. Also easier to see in the dark. At least the panel is. The wood seems to absorb the light.

More on the Hyde/EFCcv combo box:

All 1/8″ jacks for interfacing with modular synth systems. The output is still line level so we recommend using these with a GPI module or something similar for attenuation and reamping to eurorack levels. Or just use it as normal with synths and drum machines. You just need the 1/8″ to 1/4″ jacks sold here.

The Hyde Distortion Filter is one half of the famous Jekyll n Hyde box but with some enhancements.

  • Inverted Filter CV
  • Resonance CV
  • Hi Pass CV
  • Midrange Boost CV
  • Distortion circuit bypass

***If you try and purchase this and the link doesn’t work, its likely it has already sold. I will fix this listing as soon as I can but I may be off gird till Wednesday Aug 4th.

This guy has a unique poison bottle etched on the front. I had assembled the Nuclear Winter White panel with a flux meter lens but noticed it had an imperfection in the powder coating. I shelved the panel thinking I might keep it for myself. The other day had the idea of engraving a design over it. Spent a few hours making some adjustments and trying different ideas until I came up with this. The laser etching eliminated the blem. Went with a natural finish. I’m very happy with the look. May have to explore natural finishes further. But for now this one is available!

BTW: The flux meter flickers and pulses to the frequencies of your audio signal. A very nice and comfortable light show especially if you’re in a dark studio.

One of the last remaining Jekyll n Hyde dual filter units with a vintage meter. Vintage meters of this size are getting scarce and we need them for EFC Studio orders. I’ve had a couple of remaining panels so I’m trying to send them off to a good home. **This is not a b-stock unit. The meter being very old does have a scuff on the upper right side of the bezel. Vintage meters often have various imperfections. If your OCD and that will bother you please be advised.

The Jekyll n Hyde is a dual LP filter distortion box with enhanced resonant feedback. One Transistor ladder filter and one Diode ladder filter. The input can be linked to feed a mono signal into each filter creating a wide stereo effect. This sounds great with mono analog synths. Both filters have a pre drive/distortion, a post gain and germanium clipping. Each filter also has a slow drifting LFO for subtle modulation and CV ins for filter control.

***We are no longer taking special orders for Jekyll n Hyde boxes. This is one of the last remaining units. I may assemble a couple B-Stock units if we have meters and parts over time.

JnHwesiteCard

The filters can also be used separately for stereo processing.  Just unlink the inputs with the M/S toggle in the back. Depending on how you have it dialed in the you can create a very wide stereo field or a more natural one. Both filters have a different method of distortion in the pre-drive section. Jekyll is cleaner, Hyde can be made to be fully distorted.

***I do my best to give each box its own unique look and personality. Maybe the meter are so old they are haunted?

Please Read:

This is a one-off Electron Fuzz Custom Retro “mini” with a sexy vintage mini meter. The box is a heavy maple stained mahogany red.

For someone who would like a top shelf version of our most popular pedal in a smaller foot print.

Much smaller and closer in size to the aluminum box version. Sounds amazing with synths, drum machines and guitar.

I’ve included a shot next to a Big Muff for scale.

I like this smaller version quite a bit but the mini aircraft style meters are hard to come by ($$) and the size is a little harder to craft on the table saw. This one was made with our last 4.5″x6″ panel. I have no plans to make more of these for some time.

The top panel is a very hefty 8th of an inch thick piece of metal. It’s difficult to punch through cleanly without ruining our punch we use for the smaller VU meters. So we opted to hand drill a proper hole for a slightly larger vintage meter. The result is striking.

Please note this does not have the clean circuit “bleed” like on the larger “Retro” version.

ABOUT THE ELECTRON FUZZ CUSTOM

The Electron Fuzz Custom  “RETRO” houses the same circuit as the aluminum pedal version but is placed in a classy wood box. ***We have added a diode clipping mod just above the meter.

This is an extremely high gain distortion.

Here is a pretty cool demo video from the “Pedal and Effects” youtube channel featuring Alessandro Cortini of NIN, Sonoio and Modwheelmood.

[list_circle]Things I personally enjoy about this pedal:

  • Fuzzy to crunchy tones
  • Wide range of possible textures and character
  • Expressive distortion oscillations
  • Feedback noise loop for unusual sound design
  • Extremely high gain for recording direct to your DAW
  • Use with guitars and keyboards
  • VU meter responds to your playing

[/list_circle]

The red LED  switches on when boost mode is enabled. A convent way to know where you are when playing.

• Knob controls:

A unique approach to tone control…

Hurt: Controls the gain of 3rd gain stage.
FB Noise: On/Off adjusts the amount of feedback in the circuit for noise making. Creates a weird octave mod fx.

• Switch controls:
Low cut toggle: Cuts the low end for a slightly less bassy more gated sound.
x1000 gain: On left stomp switch.

You will need an 18volt Power Supply like this one. Power supply NOT included.

This is a 19″ 3U studio rack. Approximately 6″ deep.

sn#001

Sorry, this item has sold.

Please Read:

Much like the Jekyll n Hyde dual filter box but two Hyde Filters!

This is a one-off unit. I had purchased the rack enclosure a few years ago. The rack itself didn’t well work for the layout of the EFC Studio. So on a whim we decided to put two of the new Hyde Distortion Filters with the illuminated meters (and full CV) inside instead.

I’ve been working on the new “Retro” (wood boxed single version) with the illuminated meter and felt this double unit needed to exist. Not many 19″ studio racks have CV but I thought it might be better to have it rather than to leave it out.

On the back are 1/4″ in/outs jacks for both the left and right modules. Standard instrument line level. This is not an XLR unit. I have added an input link via toggle on the front, much like whats on the Jekyll n Hyde boxes. That way you can create crazy stereo soundscapes from a single mono instrument. The rack unit is powered by an 18volt DC supply. (not included) Same supply used for Jekyll n Hyde boxes. A large toggle on the front powers the unit on/off.

**Not sure if this will be a standard RMLfx offering but I’ll consider it based on the response we get here.

More about the Hyde Distortion Filter:

The HDF is an analog diode ladder filter with two distinct distortion circuits that blend together (pre-filter). The result can be dialed in to create a blend of the two signal paths. Where they meet in the middle is a third district fuzz. The resonance can be tuned down to about 80hz. Tuning the resonance of each unit left/right can create a ghostly sound scape of instability. Something you don’t get from VSTs and soft synths.

Pure beautiful analog moving real electrons.

There is a slow drifting LFO with its own distinct out. The LFO can be patched into any of the CV inputs. The idea behind this is to keep the filter “alive” rather than sitting in a static position.

There is a toggle that bypasses the distortion/fuzz signals completely for further creative audio sculpting.

Things I enjoy about this circuit:

  • The sound of the filter! Smooth and dark.
  • The distortion is not high gain. Works well with noisy synths.
  • Enhanced resonant feedback for more expressive tones
  • Pre-filter distortion and Post overdrive for gain recovery
  • Post germanium clipping/saturation
  • CV filter control, use modular gear to ….modulate!
  • Slow drifting LFO modulation keeps an otherwise stagnate signal alive.
  • True Bypass

• Knob controls:

Up: Pre-Distortion
Hyde: Filter
Fortis: Resonance
Down: Post-Drive
Nefras: LFO Modulation
“Y” LED: LFO Pulse
Blas: LFO Amount
Zeal: LFO Speed
React: Germanium Clipping
**Requires a regulate 18volt DC Supply. Standard negative tip with a min of 150ma. (not included) Will run on lower voltages for a dirtier sound as long as the power supply can provide enough current. Lower voltage will affect the smoothness of the filter.

**We will ship this UPS w/signature. Overseas purchases please be aware of international import tax and duties.

Looks great with an EFC Studio:

A machine of war now an instrument of artistic expression.

This is a Hyde Distortion Filter (Analog Diode ladder filter with pre-distortions)

It’s built into a vintage Military 1939 LM-4 “Crystal Frequency Indicator”. Used by the US Navy during WW2. This box took a considerable amount of work to complete. Getting the main knob to smoothly turn and interface with a modern potentiometer was difficult. We’ve replaced the window on the left side with a flux meter. It flashes and flickers in response to your audio signal. This LM-4 has an extremely low serial number of #24. Likely manufactured and used immediately for the war effort. There were many revisions later on such as the LM-15. No doubt making subtle improvements along the way. This is a very early unit.

January 14th 1939 appears on the ID tag. Its hard to know the exact manufacturing date but given the low serial no# we can assume its very close.

The layout of the input, output and knobs worked out especially well. As a general rule we don’t like to take a museum piece and add arbitrary holes that obscure print or disrupt the original design.

  • Crystal on/off (True Bypass)
  • R.F. Coupling (input)
  • Phones (output)
  • Modulation on/off (LFO Amount)
  • Power Fil. Plate (LFO Speed)
  • Corrector toggle (Distortion/Clean)
  • H (top knob right Distortion Pre Mix)
  • L (Post filter drive)
  • Frequency Band Low\ /High (LFO bypass)
  • Dial units (LPF Frequency)
  • R.F. CPLG (Resonance)

We’ve put the 1/8″ cv jacks across the top along with the clipping diodes knob. The print has been laser etched. We left the remnants of an old surplus sticker that seems to indicate it was once resold here locally in Portland Oregon.

The unit sits on a shock absorbent support system designed for installation on aircraft or naval vessels.

What does it sound like? The music in the video below was made with a Hyde Distortion Filter and an Electron Fuzz Distortion.

The standard Hyde distortion filter looks like this:

All analog distortion ladder filter combined with an all analog high gain distortion. Set up to crossover with eurorack systems.

We are finally getting caught up enough to have a few random offerings. This is a beautiful darker black cherry European Beech. This version has the classic radio tower print and a shorter back plate exposing more of the wood.

Videos coming soon. You can find a lot of demes of the individual pedals and a few of the combo on my Instagram page.

For your consideration. This museum piece is a vintage 1950’s “Flyback Transformer Tester Model 98” box by the Kirby Products Corporation. It is equipped with a standard Electron Fuzz Custom pedal inside of it.

The box holds a very large vintage meter that responds to your audio signal. The box is all original. We only had to add a couple of holes to accommodate the hardware. A jack plate for 1/4″ ins/outs is installed on the right side of the box. We take great care to not mess up the original look, feel and design of the test equipment we modify.

Inside we are using all vintage 2n3568s dome transistor in the signal path. This gives the pedal a “tighter” more “focused” feel and sounds different than the standard design.

The box can be set safely on your studio desk in the upright position without tipping, but can also be set face up. Sorry, no stomp for bypass.

This is meant to be a studio piece. A secret tool that adds unique character to your tracks.

The large “Short Test” toggle engages a diode clipping mod (not on the standard pedal). This reduces the gain and turns the signal into a compressed fuzz tone. The two lower knobs are the tone controls “Hurt” and “Pain”. One reduces high frequencies, the other low frequencies. However the unique design of the Electron Fuzz pedal is not fixed. So by changing the tone controls you’re actually changing the dynamic gain stages of the circuit.

The large jewel glows while the pedal is active. A toggle switch (lower left) will engage the true bypass when in the up position.

The upper knob next to the power LED is the output volume. The “Calibrate” knob is the feedback oscillation control. If you’re not familiar with the EFC series pedals this is one of the defining characteristics of the pedal. It’s there for noise making and can sound much like an oscillator that can be turned all the way down to a pulse.

Below that are two toggles, one to cut low sub frequencies, the other to engage the “x1000” circuit. An additional set of gain stages that GREATLY increase the distortion.

The dimensions are 9″ wide x 6.75″ tall x 4″ deep.

And if for reference this is what the standard version of the Electron Fuzz Custom looks like:

Please read: Brand new EFC pedal with new art and 5 vintage Motorola 2n3904 transistors. Only 4 units available.

A unique part of history. A while ago I acquired a some very old Tektronix PCBs, I set them aside to be used for a special project. Recently I decided to try some parts from them on an EFC Distortion pedal and it sounded great!

The transistors, harvested from a 1968 “Rom Scanner” PCB have a slightly different character than the normal EFC pedal. The transistors are lower gain coming in with a beta of about 120 to 160 …the normal transistors we use are in the 400+ range. The pedal still sounds like an EFC but “different”. Still very high gain but maybe a bit more “defined”

Unfortunately I only have a small hand full of these transistors so we are only able to make a total of 4 pedals.

The pedal has the newest EFC artwork that will eventually replace the simple radio tower image.

Lots of cool history about Tektronix available. Check it out here: Tektronix INC

The Electron Fuzz “Custom” is an extremely high gain distortion.

***Orders may take 1-2 days depending on availability.

More about the EFC (Electron Fuzz Custom)

Here is a great demo video from the “Pedal and Effects” youtube channel featuring Alessandro Cortini of NIN, Sonoio and Modwheelmood.

Please read the brief history of the Electron Fuzz here.

[list_circle]Things I personally enjoy about this pedal:

  • Fuzzy to crunchy tones
  • Wide range of possible textures and character
  • Expressive distortion oscillations
  • Feedback noise loop for unusual sound design
  • Extremely high gain for recording direct to your DAW
  • Use with guitars and keyboards
  • VU meter responds to your playing

[/list_circle]

The red LED on the radio tower switches on when boost mode is enabled. A convent way to know where you are when playing.

• Knob controls:

A unique approach to tone control…

Hurt: Controls the gain of 3rd gain stage.
